Post-Punk

Punk rock evolution has been continuous for a very long time. Punk still carried on in England past the ’70s, however it became a lot more introverted and experimental. They begun to integrate keyboards to their music and build pure energy. The band Joy Division was a huge influence on this new English sound. The music became more poppy and was a lot more acceptable within the mainstream. The Smiths, The and Adam and the Ants are examples. Post-punk used visuals this type of music videos, and rapidly moved to america while using new television channel, MTV. It is still around, mostly available as indie and alternative music.

Pop-punk

The 80s also brought pop punk. Bands like the Undertones and Bad Religion started to modify their sound to possess more melodies and harmony while maintaining the edgy lyrics. Again, the the southern area of California scene delivered a major part of this new genre. All of the beaches in California, and extreme sports like skateboarding and surfing, transformed with genre. NOFX, The Offspring, Blink-182 etc, each one is much of this scene. This genre is regarded as the popular of all the subgenres in the usa, and is still seen today.

Today

Punk rock has pretty much been absorbed by pop-punk today, but I do not find that a good deal of very bad thing. Plenty of it sounds exactly the same, but there are also some gems among the masses. Subgenres upon subgenres continue to be emerging from the original punk rock sound. The punk rock evolution is still going, and in the long run… it can be too big just for this small article.

So, I’ll end it on this: tune in to your local bands, purchase some punk cds, and support. Punk rock is not dead, it is just evolving. Just because it is not screaming, yelling, moshing, etc, doesn’t suggest it is not punk anymore. Just support that which you still have and keep your scene alive!
