Decades come and Decades go, but with each passing Decade there are defining moments. With regards to the music scene, the defining moment of the last Decade has to be the influence of indie Rock. There hasn’t been quite a time in music history in which this genre was as big as it is now.

With the alternative Rock of the 90′s out of the way. The door was open for the birth of indie Rock at the beginning of the last Decade. Amazingly over Ten years later and indie is still as popular now as when it first started out.

Bands such as Wilco, and the White stripes brought a breath of fresh air to the music scene in the early part of the Decade. Fans the world over were admiring the fact that their type of music was nothing like the mainstream music that they were used to hearing.

So what exactly do we mean by indie Rock? Most people will tell you that indie stands for the fact that these bands are signed to independent record labels instead of the major labels. Some may tell you that it means that the bands are not officially signed to any record label. Whilst others may just say that indie means it is a new genre of music unlike the mainstream genres.

Most people agree that whatever the meaning of indie is, the fact is that it produces some great music. For too long we have had to put up with music that was specifically geared up to getting a top 40 airplay slot.

As many new indie bands are experimenting with new sounds, there is a definite feeling that indie will be around with us for quite a bit longer yet.

Maybe most of the success has come about because of the ease of access to the internet. Many new bands are to be found daily on the internet playing their songs. Whatever the reason for the success of indie Rock, I hope that it continues.

What is for sure is that indie is going to be around for at least another Decade. Of that fact I am sure!
