Most people have a favourite genre of music and often a favourite song in particular. The instinct is to learn how to play that song and then move on to another favourite. However this can become quite dull and frustrating. Furthermore it limits the amount you can learn.

It is better to get a wider variety of genres, both to increase the range of music you learn and to make you a more adaptable player. This is why it is equally important to mix learning to play by ear with sheet music, or playing with picks and your fingers. With picks this is also a good idea as playing exclusively with your fingers can wear out the instrument over time with the natural oils in your fingers. This will also wear out the strings quicker.

As well as sheet music there are also a number of tutorials available. You can buy books or DVDs of classes that can give you a series of lessons to work on. There are also demonstration videos on the internet that will help you to develop your playing. The advantage of demonstration videos is that you can pause them and replay until you are confident.
