Alternatives To An FM Car Modulator

Many people without auxiliary options in their cars use an FM modulator to play their favorite songs of their MP3 player. They do so because they believe that the FM modulator provides CD quality sound. Unfortunately, for those users that is simply not true. FM modulators actually convert the audio from your MP3 player into RF signals, which are then sent to the car’s FM radio. So instead of CD quality sound, one ends up with FM radio quality sound.

The drawbacks of a modulator start with the fact that a modulator is permanently installed in your vehicle. This creates obvious problems if it breaks, stops working, or if you want to sell the car. In order to avoid any headaches over instillation and uninstallation, you may want to consider an alternative to the FM car modulator.

    So what are the alternatives?

The cheapest option is the cassette adapter, which connects the MP3 player to the audio system via a 3.5mm input through the tape deck. Unfortunately, this option is also the least reliable, as the tape often wears down relatively easily and the sound quality is not the best. Because cassette players are also obsolete, this option may not even available.

A more permanent fix would be to go with a wireless transmitter. Some people call these wireless modulators, but either way they are a great option for playing your iPod in the car. One thing to avoid however is a cheap transmitter. You’ll see several poor quality units out there that cost between $10 and $30. These will not give you the audio quality that you’re looking for. There will be considerable interference because of their weak signal.

It’s important to note that there are high quality transmitters that vastly outperform most generic transmitters. High quality transmitters produce a very strong signal that will effectively cut out most, if not all, interference. The audio quality of a quality transmitter will be as good, if not better, than an FM car modulator.

The following additional benefits are also included with a quality transmitter:

    1. Essentially no installation or setup.

    2. An almost unlimited amount of uses because it is compatible with just about any audio source you can think of.

    3. The ability to broadcast on any public FM radio band.

    4. Preset frequencies to easily switch between favorites, volume and mute control, manual on/off switch, microphone compatibility, ability to switch from stereo to mono and automatic gain control.

    5. A variety of charging options, ranging from USB, wall adapter, cigarette lighter, or even battery.

    6. Approximately 150 feet, the near maximum allowed by the FCC, transmission power; providing great audio and little to no interference.

The portability and versatility of a quality FM transmitter make it a better all around product when compared to an FM Car Modulator. The FM transmitter is extremely easy to use and can be used with virtually any audio source, in virtually any location. Conversely, the FM car modulator is only useful in one location. So if you want the freedom to broadcast your personal music wherever you are, my advice is to go with an FM transmitter.
