I’d seen a poster referring to the most recent, scary film around. It showed a drill going into the mouth of a poor guy sitting in some type of torture chamber. Just by viewing the scene on the poster it seemed really terrifying and difficult to think about, would I dare to see the movie?… The response was “yes”. Lately, for whatever reason, I’ve been in the mood of seeing scary, bloody, movies. Perhaps it is because lately Hollywood has seemed to be in the mood also, just count how many scary films have been established going back three years and you’ll realize they’ve been lots of, they have been… a lot.

But coming back to Hostel; I decided to go and see how frightening this “new scary” movie really was. The theater was not totally full, but there was many more people than I thought, somehow the movie trailers had attracted a large audience. After a scene that seemed obtained from a deep hell’s dungeon with a dirty man cleaning the gray floors of the torture room, the beginning of the movie showed us several guys, two American students and a man from an Island inside some kind of club in Amsterdam, doing what most tourists do in that popular European port. After a few scenes in those clubs, including the leaving behind of the sensual services of a stunning blond by one of the American guys, they arrive to their hostel only to learn the door is locked and they would have to wait outside until dawn to regain entry to their room. But after an incident with the neighbors they find help along with a roof for their heads that night thanks to the good manners of a strange guy that invites them to his room. Again the scenes of drugs and sex are present all around, I wonder if everything in Amsterdam is actually sex and drugs, truly I doubt it.

This strange guy has a secret he wants to share with his new friends. If they would like to spend a really good time with all the pleasure and excitement women can give they may be in the wrong place, they ought to go East. There’s a town in Eastern Europe where beautiful women abound plus they are willing to spend their time and senses with you. Obviously he sparks the curiosity of these young men and they eagerly ask for directions. He carelessly gives them the address of a very special hostel, where they will find all those amenities. Once morning arrives they’re on the road, let’s better say, on the rails.

They travel by train since many Europeans do and everything goes fine with the exception of an incident that introduces us to one of many characters of the movie. He is a business person who travels in the same cabin and that happens to be heading to the same location they are going. He is a man that appears to be in his sixties and he shows to the world a tranquil appearance; though there’s something that makes the audience to doubt his intentions. Particularly following a shameful incident that forces him to depart the cabin.

Some time afterwards our three adventurous men have arrived to their destination. It’s a standard Eastern European small town packed with charming old houses and brick streets. As they approach the address they were given by that strange guy back in Amsterdam the expectation of the fun ahead lets them have the very best of moods. Now they are inside the Hostel, they are asked for their passports and then they’re assigned to their room.

They find the first surprise of the trip after they have moved into their room, they gladly realize they’ll be sharing the room with two stunning ladies that seem to be perfectly alright standing unclothed in their presence. All appears to be according their expectations of the so strongly recommended town. They spend the night at one of the clubs, go home with the women but suddenly, as an army of dark clouds in the sky, everything that seemed so perfect starts to reconfigure into a type of a nightmare.

Oli, the guy from the Island, has vanished without a trace after leaving with one woman they met in the club. Paxton and Josh prefer to believe that he left without warning instead of contemplating something bad happening to him. They try to return to the great times at the club with their girlfriends but things go wrong again. Josh starts feeling ill and leaves the club. He barely makes it to the Hostel where they are waiting for him. Scene by scene we begin to realize there something very wrong happening in that town. Specifically when the head of Oli appears on screen that has a scene from the hell dungeon.

At this point is Josh’s turn, he’ll meet with his friend from the train again, Jan Vlask. However it won’t be at the club flanked by beautiful women. Now he will be his merciless torturer within the chambers of that horror land. The movie shows how Vlask satisfies his instincts and frustrated vocation as a surgeon by cutting Josh’s body at will with the movements and calm of a very vicious butcher.

There is only Paxton left; there was something within the drink he took and he has fallen asleep in the restroom at the club saving his life for the moment. Things are confusing, people have left; even their girlfriends are gone and nobody knows about Josh. He goes to the police but they just take the case nominally, later we’d learn they are also a slab in the horror chain of the savage town.

Walking among the streets Paxton passes by his ex-girlfriend who looks nothing like the nights before, she is changed and there are no more kisses. He asks her about his friends and after some thought she concedes to take him where they are. They take a taxi and follow a road that takes them to an old factory building that appears to be only ruins. But there’s something greater than ruins inside, the building is a home of human misery.

There are actually men throughout, some coming into others leaving, always protected by escorts. It is a gathering of multimillionaires for the most cruel of the games. Human hunting and torturing as a way of excitement and relaxation for the powerful. Paxton passes through the chambers where the most despicable acts are now being performed; and suddenly he realizes he’s fallen in the trap. They have paid $50 grand for him, the price of an American man ready to be hunted.

After cutting off three fingers and being tortured by a threatening short and bald man. Paxton manages to escape thanks to the lack of experience of his torturer. Nevertheless he would still need to evade all of the guards surrounding the installation before he is able to be free….there are still many horrors ahead for Paxton… I won’t tell you the end…you go and enjoy it yourself.
